Btw: what you model is what you see in the preview, but of course bigger, its the same technique i used for "alien-mist" and alot of my other work.

About:
You will model a 3d abstract shape using a sphere as a building block in 3dsm. We will use box modelling technique with a mesh smooth on top, and for that abstract look, we will be adding a bend modifier.
Software:
I used 3dsm 4.2 for this. Any version/software that has: (....will do....)
mesh smooth
bevel polygons
bend modifier

Tips:
Dont forget you can render to what ever size you want
Play with the bend modifier settings, or maybe even add another modifier
Add a material maybe
Duplicate the render to fill space and add some more bend or a different direction, or create a whole new render and combine them
Box model different shapes with mesh smooth, add different modifiers for different effects
Mesh smooth more if your render is not smooth
i waited 1 and 1/2 hour for this tutorial.. (i'm on 56k too ), and i must say.. that was quite worth it.. great tutorial
