You mean like the shadows in my wip titan? I use 3dsm, all i do is add a standard skylight (anywhere in the scene, doesnt matter where) Then go advanced lighting and render using light tracer, on the standard settings. Simple but effective for wip as it shows all the details, depth and shadows off. I dont use maya 6 unfortunately but if this is the effect you are after i can find out for you no problem.

thx for the comment man, u got any tips on rendering n lighting? i want to get those real nice smooth shadows, i think its done by using mental ray, but i dont know how to set that up!
